DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS

2018-19 ANNOUNCEMENT AND INVITATION TO APPLY

Frank and Stephanie Huestis McLean Memorial  Scholarship

Eligibility:   Biology majors with a class standing of sophomore, junior or senior.

Award:        up to $450

How to apply:

  • Applicant’s full name, UO identification number, mailing address and email address,
  • one page statement,
  • academic transcripts (unofficial acceptable),
  • letter of support from research adviser.

Scholarship award may be used to assist with expenses related to attending the university, including but not limited to tuition, fees, books, room and board. Applicants who have won this award in the past are not eligible to apply again.

Deadline:    February 1, 2019

Paul and Helen Weiser Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility:    Undergraduate or graduate students who achieved academic excellence, who are in substantial need of financial assistance, and who show promise for worthwhile achievement in later life. Students must qualify for financial need which is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  UO link to FAFSA.

There is no US citizenship requirement for this award.

International students who would like to be considered should fill out the Financial Resource Form (https://isss.uoregon.edu/sites/isss1.uoregon.edu/files/20170814_financialresources_application.pdf) and submit it to the Office of International Affairs. This is what the Financial Aid office uses in place of a FAFSA.

Award:        up to $3,000

UROP – Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programs

UROP Mini Grants

Eligibility:

  • Must have a project proposal finalized and faculty mentor secured prior to applying
  • >3.0 GPA
  • Must be returning to the UO the term following receipt of the mini-grant
  • Applicant must obtain a commitment from a faculty member to supervise their research project as their mentor.  Faculty mentors must be Tenure Track Faculty or Career Non-tenure Track Faculty with an FTE of .50 or above.  Please verify with your faculty mentor that they meet these criteria

Award:        Provides up to $1000 of support to undergraduate students that are conducting research and creative scholarship under the guidance of a UO faculty member.

 Deadline:    Fall; October 31, 2018     Winter;  February 13, 2019

VPRI Undergraduate Fellowship

Eligibility:

  • Must have a project proposal finalized and faculty mentor secured prior to applying
  • >3.0 GPA
  • Returning to the UO the academic year following the research project
  • Applicant must obtain a commitment from a faculty member to supervise their research project as their mentor.  Faculty mentors must be Tenure Track Faculty or Career Non-tenure Track Faculty with an FTE of .50 or above.  Please verify with your faculty mentor that they meet these criteria.

 Award:        Fellows receive a $5,000 stipend to support them during the summer.

 Deadline:   April 17, 2019

Peter O’Day Fellowship in Biological Sciences

Eligibility:

  • Must have completed BI 211 or 281 with a B or better (or have completed either 200-level sequence with a B average) prior to applying
  • >3.0 GPA
  • Research projects must come from a field with the biological sciences
  • Proposals must come from an undergraduate-graduate student pair
  • Undergraduate students must be enrolled at the UO during the fall term after the summer research experience

 Award:       Each of the undergraduate and graduate fellows receive a $5,000 stipend ($10,000 total) to support them during the summer

 Deadline:   April 17, 2019
