All life sciences research laboratories occupy contiguous space with in university’s science complex. The Department of Biology is well equipped with research facilities.
The Electron Microscopy Facility is well equipped for ultrastructural and biomaterials research. Used by a wide range of life science and materials researchers at University of Oregon the facility comprises of an FEI Titan 300kV analytical TEM/STEM, a Zeiss Ultra 55 SEM, and an FEI Helios DB-FIB with cryo capabilities. The lab also houses ultramicrotomes, evaporators, freeze-fracture, and other sample preparation equipment. A 120kV TEM with cryo capabilities will be added soon.
For prospective students unfamiliar with the techniques used in the facility, training sessions with full-time lab faculty, one-on-one instruction and assistance is also available when needed.
Integrative Science Complex
The current focus of the Integrative Science Initiative is a phased approach to shared facilities development that encourages a broad integration of disciplines, public-private partnerships, and collaborative research. The initiative leverages the UO’s tradition and culture of interdisciplinary science by advancing an even more unified approach to research and inquiry; integrative science. It also builds on successes of the Brain, Biology, and Machine Initiative and the Materials Science Institute, and connects to the “Big Ideas” in sustainability and human health.
The Histology Facility specializes in techniques that permit the visualization of tissue components at the resolution of the light microscope. Emphasis is placed on neuroanatomical and immunocytochemical methods. Collaborative efforts, instruction, and technical support are included in the functions of the facility.
Monoclonal Antibody Facility
The Monoclonal Antibody Facility provides university researchers the opportunity to utilize current monoclonal antibody technology. As a result, the development and application of monoclonal antibodies has proven to be a popular, cost effective, and successful option for a variety of research groups. These collaborations have produced antibodies used to make advances in studies of molecular structure, subcellular activities, and cellular differentiation.
Facility services encompass every aspect of monoclonal antibody development, including generation of novel antibodies, large-scale antibody production and purification, and analysis of antibody binding specificities.
Genomics & Proteomics
The High Throughput DNA Sequencing and Genomics facility supports scientific research at the University of Oregon by offering genetic and genomic technologies. We provide in-house services and have available specialized equipment. Our services include Sanger DNA sequencing, microarray-based genotyping, microarray printing, robotics for high throughput manipulation of DNA samples, and next generation Illumina-based high throughput DNA sequencing and associated informatics. The facility includes various shared equipment, such as a microarray scanner, a nanodrop spectrophotometer, tetrad thermocyclers, phosphoimaging scanner, and a real-time PCR system.
The DNA Sequence lab provides sequencing service using two capillary-based Beckman Coulter CEQ DNA Analysis Systems. We use Dye Terminator Cycle sequencing chemistry and routinely provide over 700 base pairs per reaction on high quality template. The facility also houses two LiCor DNA Sequencers used primarily for high throughput genotyping.
Since its opening in 2004, the Transgenic Mouse Facility has produced more than a thousand mice, including over 30 new lines and many re-derived lines. Our facility also provides Embryonic Stem Cell gene knockout services and has sucessfully achieved several knockout lines. The TMF goal is to be able to provide all the services necessary to produce and maintain genetically modified mice. These services range from designing projects to maintaining colonies. A new building (the 100,000 square foot Lewis Integrated Science Building) is currently under construction (Fall 2010) will increase our mouse cage capacity to 5000 cages with state of the art facilities, including behavioral study rooms and histology rooms.
Our staff are continually improving techniques and services through formal training and partnership with other facilities including The Jackson Laboratories and the Stanford Transgenic Research Center.
