General appearance:

Ponderosa Pines are well known for their bark which smells like vanilla. The bark also has a distictive appearance as it tends to flake off in puzzle shaped pieces. These trees tend to grow in drier sites and at a wide range of elevations.

The Ponderosa branches appear bushy, particularly at the ends of the twig.

Needles occur in bundles of THREE.

Ponderosa cones are larger than Lodgepole cones and have a sharp, stiff prickle on each cone scale.
