Alan received BA degrees in Biological Science and Chemistry from University of California, Irvine, in 1981.
He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Oregon in 1994 with Ry Meeks-Wagner. Alan isolated and analyzed genes transcribed in the apical meristem of flowering plants.
Alan was a postdoc with John Willis. In the Willis Lab, he developed molecular tools to study the evolution of plant breeding systems in species of yellow monkey flower (Mimulus sp.).
Alan taught for 1 year at Central Oregon Community College before coming to the UO.
