Alan received BA degrees in 1976 from the University of California at Santa Cruz with majors in Environmental Studies and Biology. He completed a PhD in biology at the University of Oregon in 1984 with Stan Cook, studying the interaction between fire and disease in mountain hemlock forests.

Alan has taught biology and environmental science classes at Pacific Lutheran University, Lane Community College, and the University of Oregon. He was Curriculum Director for the Department of Biology from 1997 to 2006. He is a recipient of University of Oregon’s Ersted Award, awarded to teachers who have demonstrated exceptional abilities to induce students to reason and not merely memorize.

Alan has been active in undergraduate science curriculum development and reform and has directed summer science outreach programs for middle school, high school, and community college faculty. He was lead scholar for the Rediscovering Biology series produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting in 2003.

Alan was appointed Director of the Environmental Studies Program in 2006.
