Special Winter Course: BI 321 Molecular Genetics Research Laboratory

This course is designed to give motivated students an opportunity to engage in semi-independent research and to gain experience in modern laboratory methods in genetics and molecular biology. The course is intended for students interested in a career in research and should be good preparation for graduate school. Please drop off application in Eric Selker's box in the Biology Main Office (77 Klamath Hall).

Another Unique Course Offering: BI 399 Genetics

The purpose of this course is to provide an in-depth introduction to modern genetic techniques - that is, how mutations are used to analyze gene function. The course has been designed with the assumption that students have a solid grasp of the material presented in Bi252/Bi214. Specific topics include:

Forward genetics - identifying mutations that affect a biological process of interest.

The art and science of designing genetic screens. We will discuss the model organisms yeast, C. elegans, Drosophila, and mouse.

Molecular techniques for identifying the corresponding genes.

Reverse genetics - techniques for generating new mutations in a specific gene of interest.

How to use mutations to dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes. In particular, the use of: Conditional mutations, Mosaic analysis, and Enhancers

Suppressors and Epistasis

How to analyze existing variation in a population to identify the genetic bases of simple and complex traits - for example, identifying human genes responsible for such phenotypes as disease susceptibility and personality.
